Christmas is just around the corner. During this time we scale back the amount of fitness classes to allow our instructors to rest their bodies after a solid year of teaching.

Bay and Basin Leisure Centre also runs a series of classes for those adults wanting to improve their swimming. Increase your fitness through swimming with stroke and technique exercises and swimming challenges with a Coach; there is no impact, it is a proven recovery method and increases core strength. Please check out the timetable for days and times. Come along and try it. Note: Fitswim stops during the school holidays.
Active Ageing Program is sponsored by ARI (Aquatic and Recreation Institute) in collaboration with the NSW government. It is an great new initiative to encourage people over 50 to keep mobile and active with friends in a fun and safe environment. Staying physically active is THE single most important thing that we can do to stay fit and independent as we get older, it is good for our bodies and our minds. The Bay and Basin Leisure Centre has added 2 new classes (both in the pool and in the gym) for the program and offers 10 classes that may be suitable for this age group. I participated in Aqua a few years ago but I had a hip replacement and lost motivation to exercise; my whole body seized up. I did try and swim independently but find I am really motivated with the group and the instructors. Since starting the Active Ageing program, I am more mobile and generally feel so much better. Everyday movements are much easier for me now! I find the classes are not boring, but planned well and Maggie has music to motivate us in the water to compliment the exercises we do!

Before I started this program my blood pressure and cholesterol levels were close to borderline requiring medication. It is now within a healthy range and no medication is required. I also suffered severe back pain and this has disappeared as my core strength has improved. I sleep better and have not had back pain since starting the program. Both instructors, Carol and Maggie make the classes fun, and I feel that they are prescribing safe exercises to help improve my overall fitness levels. Being in the group and having such professional instructors ensures that the class is fun and I look forward to coming each week, rather than it being a chore!
